For anyone who has yet to read this week's chapter, we finally get to see some eighth division love!

Not only do we get a cool flashback, but KT does us the honour of confirming several facts about our beloved 8th division.

Fact 1: Shunsui was part of the original guard 2 centuries ago. We can probably take that to mean that he has been a captain for as long

Fact 2: Nanao has been his vice captain for at least 100 years, since the flashback is dated "a century earlier" and she was already there.

Fact 3: Ukitake is too cute in this chapter!

Fact 4: Nanao was already bossing him 'round a whole century ago, and he was making lewd comments. Nothing says love like a century or more of teasing :D

I also had to point out two of the panels in which Nanao-chan appears.
In panel one, our dear Nanao-chan is wearing her hair in pigtails (how cute!!!) and her fringe is parted to the other side.
But its panel numer two that I like.... Why Nanao-chan, is that a skirt you're wearing?!?!
This panel opens up so much fic potential



I highly recommend you all to read the chapter, its wintastic. For those who have already read it, care to comment?

I'm actually pretty sure that's Lisa, considering the hairstyle (braids), and skirt. I really can't see Nanao-chan dressing in something like that, at least while on duty. She seems very traditional.

Though her appearance as VC in this sort of proves that Shunsui has a type, and that type is bossy, glasses-wearing, dark-haired women. My friend and I were talking about it, and we decided that Yamamoto might be assigning them to him simply because it's the type of thing he needs, someone to boss him around and make him do stuff.

Aside, we also think that Lisa and Nanao are related. I assumed mother at first but my friend argued that sister was more plausible. I told her that the differing surnames made it a little less possible, but she pointed out that Nanao could have changed her name to distance herself from her sister, simply because the Vaizards were probably ousted from the Soul Society.

AH, thank you for this comment! I was so confused as to why Nanao was wearing such a short skirt. It has to be Lisa! I mean, even the face looks different (if only slightly; I think it's something about the upper lip, lol).

I agree with you. That's Lisa (Risa?), because there's no way Nanao would use such a short skirt. Also, her comment about the "short hairs" is waaaay too lewd for Nanao's traditional ways.

And I was also thinking that Nanao and Lisa are related, maybe sisters or cousins. They physical appearances are too much alike...

Oh it's definitely Risa. The 'short hairs' comment is far too sketchy and bold to be Nanao.
And we are having fun with who the Vaizard were before they were Vaizard.

I still think it is a book of erotica. I think the lieutenant has to be somewhat perverted SOMEWHERE in order to survive in that division. We all know Lisa is now from her choice of reading material. Or maybe she's just missing Shunsui.

wasnt Risa/Lisa was captain of 12th before made to leave? and really would like this to be Nanao. Perhaps as Shunsui seems to have calmed down since his youth, from permiscous in the academy to lewd captain, (note the sexual implications), to a current still Nanao obssessed Shunsui, but not as haraassing like given here. my point being, maybe after so many years as his vice captain made Nanao into the women she is. maybe im just crazy

Sorry, Risa wasn't the captain of 12th division. Hikifune was, then Urahara, then Mayuri. And the VC of twelfth was Hiyori.

I'm sure there will be more stuff on them, so maybe we will see Nanao chan soon.

Oh man. I was so thrilled by that chapter at first. Then I realised that it wasn't Nanao... I felt so disappointed! I thought that Nanao-chan was somewhat unique to Shunsui, but in fact she looks like a copy of someone else that Shunsui liked in the past. KT hasn't given any proof yet of Lisa and Nanao being related in any way. So it makes me wonder... Has Nanao been chosen as lieutenant of the eight division for only her resemblance of another woman who once held the same position?

Unfortunately this is in my head as well, and it's giving doubt in my Shunsui/Nanao shipper inside me. I don't like the idea of Nanao being a replacement for some other woman.

And even if Nanao wasn't a replacement for Lisa, this really means Shunsui's flirtatious attitude toward Nanao may not be genuine. I know it says he's a "player" however I thought that Nanao maybe different to him; because he really seemed to care for her in that way...but I guess I read too much into it. T_T

Again, I agree. Many people (including me) thought that Nanao kept rejecting Shunsui because of her by-the-book, strict attitude. In fact, maybe she did that because she knew that Shunsui's apparent affection was fake... Okay, maybe not all fake, but a part of it must be. The way Shunsui speaks to Lisa is exactly the same to Nanao.
Sad thing is that I don't even like Lisa. The first time she showed in the manga, she looked like a typical shonen manga girl character. She looked vaguely Nanao-ish and that's all.

Gosh, I really hope Lisa and Nanao are related and she's not a look-a-like stand in. Judging by Shunsui's reaction to Lisa's "short hairs" response he looks like he's some what embarrassed and tired of her 'bolder' comments so maybe she rubbed off on him not the other way around and he likes that Nanao isn't as lewd (and he loves Nanao). It sucks though that KT doesn't talk about Shunsui and Ukitake alot. I NEED TO KNOW!! HE HAS TO LOVE NANAO!!! (It would be an awesome twist though if she was related to Kensei since he has a short sword too.) I NEED THE NEXT CHAPTER!!!!

Well, Carlos net translations are almost completely different when it comes to the exchange between Shunsui and Lisa. In fact, I have read about three translations from different people and the "short hairs" comment wasn't in any of them except for the one on Bleach Exile. For example, here's one of the other translations:

Lisa: I had to smack his arse to get him up!
Shunsui: Could you please not say things like that in front of the other Captains?

Not only is the dialog different, it's REALLY different. This dialog also fits Shunsui's expression better, don't you think? He looks rather irritated/tired of her antics. He never looks like that at Nanao.

Here is another version by Spacecat:

Kyouraku: Save that potty mouth for when we aren’t in front of other captains.

Once again, rather different from the translation used at bleach exile/Onemanga.

Oooh I like those translations much better.... then again, most translations are better than blinktopia. I'd say that those two make a lot more sense, both in terms of Shunsui's expression and his relationship with Nanao. If anything, I'd say that Lisa was too lewd and out there for him and hence Nanao-chan is a nice change from Lisa (at least, thats how my shipper brain likes to look at it :D)
