Hmm. Well, after reading the scene in The Honey Dish Rhapsody where Nanao ties Shunsui to a chair to make him do paperwork, I suppose similar scenes in fanfiction everywhere have been vindicated. I have sometimes enjoyed such scenes when well-written for the comedic effect, but more often cringed when I come across scenes like that.
Poorly done, scenes that have Nanao chasing/hitting/tying Shunsui make Nanao into a humorless shrew and Shunsui into a whiny, irresponsible child. What I think the canon offers is more playful than that generally--yes, Nanao chases and scolds and all of that, but Shunsui plays along with it--if he didn't want to be caught, slapped away, or tied down, he simply wouldn't be. He's much too powerful to be restrained by a rope unless he wants to be.
To me, this is a way that the two of them alter the native power dynamic between them, where Shunsui's power and position are much higher than Nanao's; she has power over him in the games they play, and it likely makes their relationship much more relaxed than it might otherwise be. Imagine Nanao as the vice captain to Byakuya, and I think she would be a far more rigid and restrained individual.
Of course, this is just the way I see their working relationship; they appear rarely enough in canon that it would be possible for dozens of different ideas to have just as much basis as this one. ;p
So true. Too many have Nanao somehow being stronger than Shun or being a complete prude. It's infuriating. She IS more serious than other characters but she doesn't have a stick stuck somewhere. I really like Nanao laughing at Shun calling her all the cutesy names. It proves she LIKES it. And a laughing Nanao is a cute mental image.
I'm not sure. But most stories have Nanao tying Shun to stuff so he can work. But maybe that is so that he WILL work. Either way I really enjoyed the story and hope to see more like it.
I had only seen her tying him up for any reason twice, both in doujinshi but never in fanfiction. Other things found in fanfiction can be found in anime/manga.
It has to be right for the scene to be good, I have seen stories where it was done wrong that have me cringing.
